Cook Like a TV Chef: The Simple Secrets

Even if the only thing you know how to make for dinner is reservations at a local restaurant, you can still become a great cook. According to best-selling author and popular PBS television personality Chef Jean-Pierre Brehier, all you need is the proper training.

"Most people go through their entire lives thinking they are lousy cooks," Chef Jean-Pierre tells eDiets. "The thing is you are not born a good cook. You have to take lessons. It is kind of like golf or tennis. If you don't take lessons, you don't know how to play the game."

When he was doing research for his recipe collections Sunshine Cuisine and Incredible Cuisine, Chef Jean-Pierre couldn't believe the number of people he met, who were totally intimidated by cooking. So when he retired from the restaurant business in 1997, the former owner of Fort Lauderdale's prestigious Left Bank restaurant decided to open his own cooking school.

Today, more than 14,000 students from all walks of life attend classes at Chef Jean-Pierre's Cooking School -- and most of them will never become professional chefs.

"Some people will become great chefs, but that is about one in a thousand," he estimates. "But I know for a fact that everybody can become a phenomenal cook, and I see it in my classroom every night."

Chef Jean-Pierre has transformed the lives of many people, who never thought they would be able to cook. In fact, one evening, a 74-year-old woman named Jean walked into his school with a gift certificate from her daughters and announced, "I can't cook, and I'll never be able to cook." Fortunately, Jean changed her mind about that after completing her first four or five classes.

"By now, she must have taken at least 50 classes," Chef Jean-Pierre says. "She just loves it. Jean has finally discovered the hobby of cooking."
