OK, so the holiday season can be a tough time for any dieter. But it is possible to get through it without gaining the usual 5 to 15 pounds like many people do. We're not talking about grazing on celery sticks at parties and fat-free (or carb-free) Thanksgiving dinners. So please, put down your leftover Halloween candy and listen up.
Bank your calories. If you know that you will be eating out, going to a party or eating an unusually large meal, skimp ahead of time. Have a salad and fruit for lunch instead of the fried chicken, knowing that later you'll be whooping it up! But don't skip meals -- many people overcompensate and end up gorging.
Get dinner (and breakfast and lunch!) at your doorstep with an eDiets meal delivery plan. You pick the meals and we deliver them -- freshly prepared and nutritionist-approved! Lose 10 lbs. in 5 weeks!
Don't tempt yourself! Do you feel compelled to keep holiday candies and cookies around? Whether you just like baking pecan pies or can't resist those slice and bake cookies with holiday shapes inside, don't sabotage yourself with temptations. I don't blame you for eating it. I blame you for having it around.
Practice buffet basics. When selecting from hors d'oeuvres or buffet-style holiday spreads, try to balance it out. Include vegetables and fruits on your plate in addition to your sampling of fatty tidbits. If you know you can have your favorites, you won't feel deprived. An added bonus: A stomach half full of vegetables is less likely to be upset than one full of rich items.
Eat, drink and be... fat and drunk. If you plan on imbibing, do so in moderation. Doesn't sound fun, but it is actually more so. Try drinking water or anything nonalcoholic between cocktails. You have more important things to do the next day than nurse a hangover.
Location, location, location. Are you standing right next to the food table at these parties? If so, the stuffed mushrooms become mesmerizing, and you might think you'll die if you don't eat yet another. Therefore, go away! Engage in conversation across the room, where you can't hear the goodies calling your name.
Contribute to the cause. If you are able to bring a dish, carry a healthier one. Nobody will be oohing and ahhing over a bowl of raw broccoli stalks, but there are many healthy and tasty recipes out there. Try low-fat dips with interesting vegetables, such as red and yellow pepper strips or apple and pear slices with fat-free caramel dip. Don't advertise that it's "diet dip" unless you want to eat it alone.
