Know Your Girls: Breast Cancer Awareness

Research shows that thousands of young women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the next year, and one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime (American Cancer Society). However, most young women don’t know about the disease or don’t think it’s something they have to worry about until they are older. Young woman CAN and DO get breast cancer. Here are some awareness tips from Susan G. Komen for the Cure:

Know your risk
-Talk to your family about your family health history
-Talk to your doctor about your personal risk of breast cancer

Get screened
-Ask your doctor which screening tests are right for you if you are at higher risk
-Have a mammogram every year starting at age 40 if you are at average risk
-Have a clinical breast exam at least every three years starting at 20, and every year starting at 40

Know what is normal for you
-Know how your breasts look and feel and report changes to your health care provider right away

Make healthy lifestyle choices that may reduce your risk of breast cancer, such as:
-Maintain a healthy weight
-Add exercise into your routine
-Limit alcohol intake
